11 December 2010

After lunch we went up to Rikugien garden on the north side of town. It may be as much as a year since we went there, though it only takes 40 minutes door-to-door. I had forgotten how pleasant it is there and made a mental note to go at least once each season. We were lucky that there was still some autumn colour, and that had certainly ensured that it was busier than usual, but not obtrusively so. We wandered there for more than an hour, leaving just as dusk fell. The dying sun just touched the upper leaves, making them impossibly bright as if with an inner fire.

Though we had taken the buggy, Emily refused to use it much, insisting on walking to Shirokane Takanawa station. We were running rather late and for once would have preferred her to ride, but as Nick said, if we do want to move towards ditching the stroller then we have to encourage her and try to be patient (very hard for me, as I walk faster than anyone else I know - except Kate!). My worry is that I won't be able to use it to carry heavy shopping. I think I will really feel the lack of a car then. We may have to reduce the variety of places we go to as well, since some of them are only really accessible with a long walk.
